UK Universities Accepting Pakistani HSSC/ICS for Direct Entry in 2027

UK Universities Accepting Pakistani HSSC/ICS for Direct Entry in 2027

Can you start a UK bachelor's degree straight after Intermediate, or do you have to do a foundation year first? It depends on the university, your subject combination, your marks and the degree you want.

Short answer: yes, direct entry is possible. Eight UK universities in the FES Pakistan UK partner network publish Pakistan-specific rules that allow Year 1 consideration after HSSC or ICS, with minimum marks between 60% and 75%. Six others mostly send Pakistani HSSC applicants to a foundation year, or are closed to Pakistani applicants for 2027.

The table below is the quick version. The sections after it cover each university in detail.

Direct Entry, Foundation Year or Advanced Entry

There are three routes into a UK bachelor's degree from Pakistan.

Direct entry to Year 1. You start the first year of the degree with no extra programme. A student with 75% in ICS, for example, can be considered for a suitable Computer Science degree at a university whose requirements they meet.

International foundation year. A one-year programme that prepares international students for degree study. Universities use it when they do not treat HSSC as equivalent to the qualification needed for Year 1. Check the grades you need to pass the foundation year and progress to the degree before you enrol.

Advanced entry or credit transfer. If you have already finished one or two years of a relevant university degree in Pakistan, some universities may place you in a later year after reviewing your modules. This is a different route from entry after Intermediate.

University-by-University Requirements

Edinburgh Napier University

Location: Edinburgh, Scotland | Minimum: 60% in HSC/FSc

Napier has the lowest published threshold of the eight. Its Pakistan guidance refers to HSC and FSc rather than listing each stream, so ICS applicants should confirm that their subjects satisfy the specific degree. Check this first for Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Data Science and engineering courses, where Maths is often compulsory.

Before applying, confirm that your combination is accepted for the course, the minimum marks in Maths or other required subjects, the accepted English tests, and that the course runs for the 2027 intake.

University of South Wales

Location: Cardiff, Newport and Pontypridd, Wales | Minimum: 65% in a relevant Year 12 Intermediate subject area

The words "relevant subject area" matter. An ICS student applying for computing fits naturally, while the same marks may not be enough for a degree with different prerequisites. English: IELTS 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component, or Duolingo English Test 110 overall with 100 in each component. Some courses ask for more.

USW also runs foundation years for applicants who miss the direct-entry conditions.

Birmingham City University (BCU)

Location: Birmingham, England | Minimum: 70% overall for Year 1

BCU names ICS in its Pakistan-specific requirements, which makes it one of the clearest options for computing applicants. The published conditions for direct Year 1 entry are completed HSSC/Intermediate, 70% overall and at least 60% in Mathematics.

Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment courses ask for at least 65% in Mathematics. A student with 75% overall in ICS but 55% in Maths would meet the general threshold and still miss the Computing requirement. English is IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each band.

Applicants who miss the academic requirements may be considered for a foundation route through Birmingham City University International College.

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU)

Location: Cambridge and Chelmsford, England | Minimum: 70% in Grade 12

ARU publishes 70% in Grade 12 for entry to the first year of a bachelor's degree, and also accepts recognised foundation programmes, A Levels and the International Baccalaureate. ICS applicants at 70% or above can apply, but ARU still checks that Maths and your other subjects match the course. A Computer Science degree may need a specific Maths background, while a business degree will not.

Compare the campus, tuition fee and international scholarships for your degree before shortlisting.

Wrexham University

Location: Wrexham, Wales | Minimum: 70% HSSC/Intermediate

Wrexham University was formerly known as Wrexham Glyndwr University and changed its name in 2023. Its current Pakistan guidance accepts HSSC/Intermediate with 70% or above for undergraduate entry.

Wrexham does not accept direct applications from Pakistan. You must apply through an authorised representative, so confirm that your consultant is currently authorised for your intake. This is a rule about how you apply, not about whether you can enter Year 1.

For lower marks, Wrexham publishes foundation entry for Pakistani students with HSC/Year 12 at 50% overall, subject to its conditions.

Browse Wrexham courses on FES Course Finder | Wrexham's Pakistan entry requirements

Aberystwyth University

Location: Aberystwyth, Wales | Minimum: 70% overall and 70% in required subjects

Aberystwyth also has a study-gap rule. Applicants for foundation or direct-entry bachelor's programmes must have finished their last period of study within two years of the course start date. If you completed Intermediate in 2024 or earlier and plan to start in 2027, check this before you apply.

Some courses with an integrated foundation year may accept lower results, and Aberystwyth publishes international foundation options with their own academic and English requirements.

University of Stirling

Location: Stirling, Scotland | Minimum: 75% overall and 75% in each essential subject

Stirling sets one of the higher thresholds. It also considers applicants who have completed one year of relevant university study. Undergraduate applicants from Pakistan must take an accepted Secure English Language Test (SELT), so check the university's English page for the tests it currently accepts.

ICS applicants who reach the threshold can apply, but the essential-subject rule still applies. For Computer Science, confirm the Maths requirement for your exact programme.

Ulster University

Location: Northern Ireland | Minimum: 75% HSSC/Intermediate

Ulster considers Pakistani applicants with HSSC/Intermediate at 75% overall for Year 1, without assuming a foundation year. Entry conditions differ by course, so check the overall mark, Maths and other essential subject grades, English, and the campus where the course is taught. This matters most for professional and technical degrees.

Universities That Usually Require a Foundation Year

Not every university in the UK partner list takes HSSC for Year 1. These six work differently.

University

What its Pakistan guidance says

Nottingham Trent University

HSSC applicants go to a foundation course at Nottingham Trent International College. FSc Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical and Commerce are listed for Year 1. ICS is not listed.

Cardiff Metropolitan University

HSSC at 60% can qualify for Year 0. Year 1 is open to Pre-Engineering or Pre-Medical at 60% with IELTS 6.0, or to other streams after a recognised foundation course. ICS is assessed individually.

Bournemouth University

HSC/Intermediate applicants complete a one-year foundation programme first, through its International College.

University of Brighton

HSSC holders need an international foundation year or equivalent. Certain Pakistani associate degrees and bachelor's qualifications are accepted for Year 1.

University of Portsmouth

HSSC is generally not accepted for Year 1. Pre-Engineering or Medical applicants above 80% may be considered individually. Portsmouth's Pakistan page lists FES among its approved representatives.

Keele University

Not accepting applications from Pakistan for 2027 start dates.

If you hold an ICS qualification and one of these universities does not list your stream, ask admissions for written confirmation instead of assuming the FSc rule applies to you.

HSSC, ICS and FSc: Does the Stream Matter?

HSSC is the overall Intermediate certificate. ICS, FSc, FA and I.Com are streams within it. A university may simply say "HSSC" without naming your stream, but your subjects still decide eligibility for the degree.

Can ICS students study Computer Science in the UK? Yes. ICS is a relevant background for many computing degrees, provided your Maths result and overall marks meet the course requirements. BCU's 65% Maths rule for Computing is a good example of how specific these can get. For ICS students, Maths marks are more often the deciding factor than the overall percentage.

You can check which programmes match your profile in the FES Course Finder for Computer Science, or read our full guide on studying abroad after ICS in Pakistan.

What Your HSSC Percentage Means

There is no single UK requirement. These ranges show where to start looking.

HSSC percentage

70% to 74%

BCU, ARU, Wrexham and Aberystwyth, plus lower-threshold options

Foundation and alternative pathways

A student with 80% can still be rejected from a degree that asks for a particular Maths or Science grade, and a student with 65% can meet one university's rule and miss another's. If you are at 50%, read can you study abroad with 50% marks in Pakistan.

IELTS and English Requirements

IELTS Academic is the most widely accepted test, but universities also take other recognised tests and some exemptions. Examples from the universities above:

  • Birmingham City University: IELTS 6.0 overall, 5.5 in each band, for most courses.

  • University of South Wales: IELTS 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component, or Duolingo English Test 110 with 100 in each component.

  • University of Stirling: an accepted Secure English Language Test (SELT) is required for Pakistani undergraduate applicants.

Some courses need higher scores, and foundation programmes have their own English levels.

Can you apply without IELTS? Sometimes. A university may accept another English qualification for admission, but UK Student visa rules are separate. An IELTS exemption from a university does not automatically satisfy the visa requirement, so check both before you book a test.

FES runs IELTS and PTE preparation if you need a test score.

UCAS Deadlines for 2027 Entry

UCAS Extra opens for eligible applicants

30 June 2027, 18:00 UK time

Last date for applications to reach universities before Clearing

2 July 2027

Clearing opens

For most conventional degrees, 13 January 2027 is the deadline to plan around. Universities can still consider later applications if places remain. Some international students apply directly to a university or through an approved representative, and those deadlines can differ, so check the course page.

Dates are from UCAS.

Documents and IBCC Attestation

Most undergraduate applications need:

  • Valid passport

  • Matric certificate and detailed marks sheet

  • HSSC/Intermediate certificate and detailed marks sheet, or a provisional certificate if the final one is not issued yet

  • English-language test result, where required

  • Personal statement

  • Academic reference, where required

  • Portfolio or extra subject documents for relevant courses

  • Certified translations or attestations if requested

Many universities accept provisional results at application stage and ask for final results before enrolment.

Do you need IBCC attestation? Not always at the start. Some universities review scanned documents first, and others ask for attested documents before a final offer or enrolment. If asked, follow the board and IBCC attestation requirements.

How to Apply

  1. Choose your degree. Popular choices after Intermediate include Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Business Management, Accounting and Finance, Engineering, Economics, Psychology and Health and Life Sciences. Check subject prerequisites first.

  2. Compare requirements for your exact course. Overall percentage alone is not enough. Look at Maths, Physics, English and any extra subject rules.

  3. Decide between direct entry and foundation. If you qualify for Year 1, compare offers. If you do not, check whether a foundation programme gives you a clear route, and compare the total cost of both options.

  4. Prepare and submit your application. Apply through UCAS, directly, or through an authorised representative, depending on the university.

  5. Review offers and prepare for your Student visa. Check offer conditions, deposits and financial requirements. After you receive a CAS, apply under current Home Office rules. Our 12-month preparation guide covers the timeline.
